What is tooth decay?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3><\/div>

Tooth decay, also known as dental caries, is a disease that occurs due to a bacterial process that damages the hard structure of the tooth (enamel, dentin). These tissues gradually deteriorate, leading to cavity formation. Tooth decay is one of the most common diseases worldwide. If left untreated, it can cause severe pain, tooth loss, infections, and in extreme cases, even death.<\/p>\n<\/div>

How does tooth decay develop?<\/h3><\/div>

Tooth decay is caused by two types of bacteria: Streptococcus mutans<\/i> and Lactobacillus<\/i>. These bacteria thrive in the mouth due to acids produced by the fermentation of carbohydrates such as sucrose, fructose, and glucose. Teeth, mainly composed of minerals, are sensitive to increased acidity and are continuously exposed to demineralization and remineralization processes through interaction with saliva. When the pH level of the tooth surface drops below 5.5, the demineralization process outpaces remineralization, leading to tooth structure damage and cavity development.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Depending on the severity of tooth decay, various treatments can be applied to restore functionality and aesthetics. However, there is no known method for fully regenerating tooth structure.
